Friends of Angel Bus, an FMCA Chapter

Calling All Angels!

Want to be an Angel? The primary goal of Friends of Angel Bus is to recruit Drivers for Angel Bus, operated by Mercy Medical Airlift under the name of Angel Bus. Angel Bus is a sister organization to Angel Flight. Both organizations provide transportation services to qualifying patients.

The things that we take for granted in our motorhomes can make it possible to comfortably move someone whose physical limitations would make travel by any other mode a nightmare. A couch or bed can give them a place to ride while lying down or sitting beside a parent or loved one.

A refrigerator might be crucial to carry medicine or special foods. Your motorhome's 120-volt AC power might be needed to run medical equipment en route. And your coach's storage space, bays, and towed car can help to carry items patients have accumulated after a long hospital stay.

Drivers Pause Between Two Legs of a Mission

If you are interested in accepting a mission please call 757-333-0084 or send an email to: info@Angel-Bus.org.

The Best Source of Driver Information is the "Volunteer Driver Handbook," which spells out everything. Click Here The handbook.

Driver Qualifications

Angel Bus volunteer drivers must meet the following qualifications: 1. Provide proof they are properly licensed. 2. Agree to abide by all Department of Transportation rules and regulations. 3. Own or have access to a motor coach. 4. Agree that the motor coach they will use is in excellent condition. 5. Provide proof of insurance. 6. Provide information regarding any motor vehicle accident.

How to Help

If you are willing to assist someone needing transportation for medical treatment, the first step is to register as an Angel Bus volunteer. After your information has been processed and you are accepted as a volunteer, you will be contacted when someone needs help in your area. Mercy Medical Airlift will have worked with the passenger’s current doctors or the hospital’s patient’s advocate to ensure that the mission is needed and that it will not aggravate his or her condition. You are free to accept or reject a mission for any reason.

Missions

Unless a driver requests otherwise, he or she will only be assigned one mission per year. Until we have enough patient requests in locations or areas where we have drivers, a driver may not even have one request per year

Accepting Compensation

In acception a referral from Angel Bus, Inc., you are agreeing to provide transportation at not cost to those we serve. When you accept a referral, you do so as a volunteer driver, not as an employee of Angel Bus. A driver is allowed to accept a referral, only when your license and insurance are current and valid. All drivers volunteering for Angel Bus missions are required to have a valid driver's license and registration.

DO NOT accept any compensation of any kind for the trip, as this will endanger the Angel Bus status with the IRS. By accepting any compensation, you could change your status with your insurance company and the Department of Transportation from private to commercial, which you really don’t want to do. If patients or passengers wish to make a contribution to the Angel Bus organization, advise them to send it in to the main office. Give them the proper mailing address and advise them that the contribution will be used for operating expenses of Angel Bus, Inc. Angel Bus, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and all contributions are tax deductible.

Deducting expenses for tax purposes

Drivers may deduct the direct (out-of-pocket) expenses of a mission. Should weather conditions force a mission driver to remain overnight, the cost of lodging and meals are deductible as well. It’s important that drivers maintain accurate records and receipts to substantiate deductions. However, for complete information, drivers should consult their personal tax advisors.
